LECTURES in LUND as network video

Installation of player program

To be able to play RealVideo streaming movies and sounds, you need to install a player for RealVideo. One possibility is to use the player from the Real company, see below.

But there is another player that usually works better. Download the Real Alternative player from:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
Allow it to uninstall the Real player if that one has been installed previously.

If for some reason you want to try the player from Real, download their free plug-in by clicking on the button below. RealVideo has client programs for most PC, Mac and Unix versions.

Note: It is the free RealPlayer Basic version you should fetch and install (unless you want to pay for some minor features included in Real Player Plus). But first check that your system disk (C:) has enough free space (at least 30 MB?), if it is too little it will cause interrupted sound when the swapfile is rearranged now and then.

During installation, it asks for the connection speed. Answer with the speed of your modem, if that is what you use, or LAN if you are connected to Ethernet. However, if you are connected to a LAN and your computer is not fast enough (less than 233 MHz), it can be wise to lower the configured connection speed. If you hear interrupted sound or it takes a long while when you press the stop button, try the next lower connection speed (stop and restart the clip in between) until you can hear it uninterrupted and it reacts fast. To lower the connection speed after installation, use Options/Preferences/Connection/MaximumBandwidth. If you want to increase it, change Options/Preferences/Connection/NormalBandwidth.

If the audio sounds distorted or strange, try to check "Disable custom sampling rates" in View/Preferences/Performance/SoundCardCompatibility/Settings. If it does not help, change it back to unchecked.

Some video file examples

Below are some audio/video stream examples with different processing. You will get better audio and video quality the higher the connection speed you have. Going from low to high we have:

Very good quality video

The following examples are almost as good as it can be.

Bad quality in some way

The original for this one was really bad, lots of snow due to too low light, a noisy slide projector close to the microphone, which is at the camcorder and far from the speaker. Both picture and sound has been cleaned by a computer program, and the video is now pretty OK but the ambience sound from the hall could not be removed.
